Plain-language glossary

Australian work words, explained simply.

Australian workplaces use terms you may not have seen before. Here is what some of the most common ones mean, in everyday English.

Payslip
PAY-slip
A record your employer gives you each time you are paid. It usually shows your hours, your pay rate, tax taken out and super paid.
Superannuation
SOO-per-an-yoo-AY-shun · often just "super"
Money set aside for your retirement. In Australia, employers generally pay this into a super fund account in your name, on top of your wages.
Tax file number (TFN)
T-F-N
Your personal number for the Australian tax system. You give it to your employer when you start a job. Keep it private and never share it publicly.
Award
uh-WORD
A document that sets out minimum pay and conditions for a type of work or industry. Different jobs can fall under different awards.
Casual employment
CAZH-yoo-ul
Work with no guaranteed hours each week. Casual workers usually receive a higher hourly rate called casual loading, instead of paid leave.
Roster
ROSS-ter
The schedule showing which shifts you are working and when. It may change from week to week in casual and shift-based jobs.
